Volleyball holds on for a 3-2 victory over Hartwick

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team defeated Hartwick College 3-2 Wednesday evening. The win lifts the Red Dragons record to 6-3 on the year.

The Inside Story
After Oneonta took the first two sets 25-20 and 25-21, Hartwick forced a fifth set by taking the next two sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-23. Oneonta would finally secure the match when they rallied for a 15-13 win in the fifth set.

In the fifth set, Hartwick jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) put the Red Dragons on the board with a kill. With Hartwick leading 4-1, Oneonta rallied for three straight points to knot the set at 4-4. With the score tied at 6-6, Hartwick went on 5-1 run to take what looked to be a commanding 11-7 lead.

Trailing 13-9, Oneonta called a timeout to regroup. After the break, a Hartwick ball handling error gave the Red Dragons some life. A kill by Kathryn Johnston (Altamont/Guilderland) and a service ace from Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) pulled Oneonta within striking distance. After Hartwick called a timeout, Fowler set up Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) for the kill, tying the set at 13-13. Hartwick then committed back-to-back attack errors as Oneonta captured a 15-13 victory.

Just the Stats
Oneonta was led by Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) and Victoria Moulder (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) who finished with 16 kills apiece. Culeton finished with a .536 hitting percentage while Moulder had a .394. Gillian Stieglitz (Montrose/Hendrick Hudson) chipped in with 12 kills while Jessica Fowler (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) dished out 49 assists.
