Vang's late goal gives Augsburg win at UM Morris

MORRIS, Minn. -- Lionel Vang (SR, Little Canada, Minn./Roseville HS) scored on a free-kick goal with 46 seconds left in regulation time, giving the Augsburg University men's soccer team a 1-0 nonconference win at the University of Minnesota Morris on Wednesday afternoon.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 1, Minnesota Morris 0
LOCATION: Cougar Field, Morris, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 4-0-1 overall, UW-Superior 3-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg outshot Minnesota Morris by a 36-3 margin in the game, including a 12-2 advantage in shots on-goal, but could not put the ball in the net until the final minute of regulation time. On a run from the left side to the center, Peyton Boich (SR, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) was fouled just outside of the penalty area, drawing a free kick. Vang took the set piece, and fired an arc over the Cougar wall, slicing to the lower left corner of the net for his team-leading third goal of the season.
• Augsburg played 22 different players in the nonconference contest, with 15 different Auggies recording shots. Vang had nine shots in the game, including four on-target, while Boich, Nick Zuchowski (SO, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS), Alex Giles (SO, Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights HS), Antonio Magadan (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) an Miguel Tejeda (FY, Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan HS).
• Goalkeepers Garrett Kaelin (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) and Zachary Berg (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Farmignton HS) split time in goal, with each recording a save in a half of play.
• Augsburg had 14 shots in the first half and 22 shots in the second half, with six shots reaching the target in each half. The Auggies also had eight corner kicks to the Cougars' one.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Including the final game of the 2018 season -- a 2-1 loss to UW-Superior in the first round of the NCAA national tournament -- Vang has now had a goal or assist in six straight games, with three goals and five assists for 11 points to his credit. His 10 points this season (three goals, four assists) put him tied for fourth among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players in overall statistics, with his four assists tied for fourth-most in the MIAC.
• Augsburg entered Wednesday's game ranked No. 9 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III national poll, its first national ranking since 2012 and its highest-ever national ranking in program history.

QUOTES FROM AUGSBURG HEAD COACH GREG HOLKER
• That was another really good effort from our guys, and we got better today. We had to deal with a low block and find ways to break it, which we did a lot in the second half. We weren't very sharp on our dead balls, so it was fitting Peyton drew the foul in the final minute to give us another chance at it. Lionel put it away to continue his scoring streak, and he has done so with great humility. He's matured so much in his career here, and it is so rewarding watching him lead this team with his play and his positive words of encouragement."
• "I don't know how many crossbars and posts we hit, and I recall a few very fine saves from their goalkeeper, but we created a lot of chances. When it's not falling, teams can start to tighten up and get frustrated with each other. Not this team -- everyone was there to support each other and we all had the confidence to know we would score. No doubt we were happy getting it done in regulation, with No. 24 Luther coming to Edor Nelson Field on Friday night on five days rest. Now we have to recover well to be able to find our legs against one of the region's best teams, year after year.
• "Spencer Enright and Herbert Carrera had exceptional performances today. They did not look like first-year players out there, and their contributions were great on both sides of the ball, but particularly in attack."
• "During different points of the game, Nick Zuchowski and Peyton Boich were really important in our attack, and I thought Alex Giles did really well providing width down the left wing. Henry Aryiku is becoming a threat in 1-v-1 duals, as he is so powerful and deceptive. I think a goal is coming from him soon."
• "Overall, we are in a good place. We are getting better every day and we are committed to making that our priority."

FOR THE FOES
• Jake Peterson had 11 saves in goal for Minnesota Morris.
