Wells College, a member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, has announced that it is closing at the end of this semester. The news follows the announced sale and closure of Cabrini, as well as an announcement from Birmingham-Southern of a similar closure. Other schools across divisions face similar predicaments as the 2023-24 academic year draws to a close, including Northland College, which has signaled a potential closure. Fontbonne has also announced that it will not admit new students for 2024-25 and the status of its athletics programs for next season is in jeopardy.

Wells is located in Aurora, New York, and reported an enrollment of 346 full-time undergraduates in its most recent filing with the U.S. Department of Education.

The announcement contained the following from a letter from the Board of Trustees: "As trustees, we have a fiduciary responsibility to the institution; we have determined after a thorough review that the College does not have adequate financial resources to continue. As you may be aware, many small colleges like Wells have faced enormous financial challenges. These challenges have been exacerbated by a global pandemic, a shrinking pool of undergraduate students nationwide, inflationary pressures, and an overall negative sentiment towards higher education."

Wells has set up a preferred teach-out agreement with Manhattanville, while there are also agreements in place with Excelsior University, Hobart and William Smith, Keuka, Le Moyne, Mercy and SUNY Brockport.
