Field hockey bounces back with 3-0 win over Marywood

The Centre field hockey team rebounded well from its first loss of the season, scoring three second half goals to post a 3-0 win over Marywood in the Mary Washington Tournament in Fredericksburg, Va. on Sunday.

After being blanked by No. 12 Christopher Newport on Saturday, the Colonels went on the offensive against Marywood, getting second half goals from Anna Fuller (Cincinnati, Ohio), Katy Meyer (Louisville, Ky.) and Sarah Jessee (Louisville, Ky.) to pull away for the victory.

Despite Centre outshooting Marywood 6-0 in the first half and holding a 5-0 edge in penalty corners, the teams went into the halftime break in a scoreless tie. Two minutes into the second half, Fuller was able to finally break the ice with an unassisted goal. Later Meyer scored on an assist from last week's SCAC Offensive Player of the Week Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.), and Jessee was able to put the game out of reach with a goal on an assist form Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Va.) with 10 minutes to play.

Overall, Centre outshot Marywood 14-4 and held an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners. Centre's Patty Cowley and Marywood's Jamie Bowman each made two saves in goal, Cowley earning her first shutout victory of the season.

Centre improves to 2-1 on the season while Marywood drops to 0-4. In their next contest, the Colonels return home to host Bellarmine Wednesday at 8 p.m.
