Centre opens SCAC play with 5-0 win over Sewanee

Centre's field hockey team opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference slate with a win and got back above .500 on the year with a 5-0 victory over Sewanee on Friday at Farris Stadium.

Sophomore Chelsea Klein (Louisville, Ky.) scored two unassisted goals, and four Colonels scored in all as Centre improved to 4-3 with a 1-0 mark in the SCAC. Sewanee fell to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Centre was able to get on the board early when Katy Meyer (Louisville, Ky.) received a Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Va.) pass just in front of the cage and scored just four minutes into the match. Later Klein fired a shot from the middle of the circle past Sewanee goalkeeper Anna Morrow to give the Colonels a 2-0 halftime lead.

Centre continued to extend the lead in the second half, getting a goal when Bacon redirected a shot by Sydney White (Louisville, Ky.) into the cage at the 24:29 mark, and another by Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky.) on an assist from Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) with 15:42 remaining. Just one minute later, Klein scored her second unassisted goal to arrive at the 5-0 total.

Senior goalkeeper Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) stopped all nine shots she faced for her second shutout of the season while Morrow also made nine saves for Sewanee. Both teams took 16 shots while Sewanee held a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners.

The Colonels will be back in action at home again Sunday when they take on Wittenberg University at 1 p.m.
