Men's Lacrosse Doubled Up by Merchant Marine, 10-5

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Junior Bill Motherway (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) scored a pair of goals and sophomore Brian D'Iorio (Huntington, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) had three assist in Wednesday evening's men's lacrosse contest against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King's Point, New York as the Valiants fell by the score of 10-5.

Manhattanville won the opening faceoff and took the games first shot out of the stick of senior Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) that was stopped by Merchant Marine netminder Matt Kantor. The Mariners then drew a penalty and went to a man-up situation that they capitalized on as Geoff Harty planted what turned out to be the first of five goals on the night. Just 42 seconds later Harty struck for his second as the Mariners took a 2-0 lead into the first break of the contest.

The second period belonged to Manhattanville as they started the quarter outshooting their hosts by a 10-5 margin, on the Valiants' 11th shot of the period at the 2:05 mark, they cut the lead in half as Daly made it 2-1. With less than a minute later, Motherway netted his first goal of the game to tie it up at two after taking a pass from D'Iorio. With the game tied, the two teams took to the sidelines for the halftime break.

In the third period, both teams continued to take their chances but no one could break through on Valiant junior keeper Dom Poletto (Engelwood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) or new Mariners goalie Alex Peyreigne who came on to start the second half of the game. With exactly seven minutes gone by in the quarter, Manhattanville took their first lead of the game as freshman Connor Castleman (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) beat Peyreigne to put the Valiants up 3-2.

After being down for the first time, the Mariner offense woke up scoring eight of the game's next nine goals, a streak that carried over into the fourth quarter. Manhattanville's lone tally during the stretch came from freshman Corey Steimel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) who scored his team-leading tenth goal of the season after taking a pass from D'Iorio. With under two minutes remaining in regulation and down by six goals, Manhattanville added one more as Motherway notched his second of the evening.

Overall, the Valiants went 7-for-18 on faceoffs, and went 2-for-8 on extra-man opportunities. Merchant Marine also capitalizes twice on the man advantage going 2-of-4. Taking the loss in goal was Poletto who stopped 16 shots while yielding the 10 Mariner goals, while earning the win in relief was Peyreigne who stopped six shots and allowed three goals in the final 30 minutes of play. Kantor ended the game making seven saves of his own while allowing the first two Manhattanville goals.
