Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College men's soccer team captured a share of the 2016 Little East Conference Regular Season Championship with a 3-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut in the regular season finale played at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.

The win gave the Anchormen (14-3-1, 5-1-1 LEC) a 5-1-1 record in the Little East, which tied RIC with UMass Boston for the LEC Regular Season Championship. The Beacons will be the top seed in the upcoming 2016 Little East Conference Tournament by virtue of their, 2-0, victory over RIC on Sept. 24. It marks the first LEC Regular Season Championship in program history for the Anchormen. RIC is now unbeaten (9-0-1) in 10 games, dating back to a 3-0 win against Roger Williams on Sept. 28.

 

Rhode Island College jumped out to the early lead as sophomore midfielder Dennis Vazquez (Providence, RI) took the ball down the near sideline and sent a crossing pass to the top of the box. Junior forward Cooper Ferreira (Westerly, RI) knocked down the cross and sent a pass to senior midfielder Thomas Wampler (Attleboro, MA) who blasted in a shot from 10 yards out to put RIC up, 1-0, at the 13:17 mark. Eastern Connecticut (6-9-1, 4-3 LEC) held the 8-5 advantage in shots for the first half, which included two that went off the crossbar, but the visitors couldn't capitalize as the Anchormen took the one goal advantage heading into halftime.

 

The Anchormen added to their lead in the 58th minute when junior midfielder Ty Catunto (New Bedford, MA) started a breakaway down the middle of the field and sent a pass to senior forward Komla Dogbey (Providence, RI). Dogbey then buried a shot from 15 yards out for his team-leading 13th goal of the season to put RIC up by a pair, 2-0. The Anchormen added another insurance goal late in the contest as Ferreira punched in a rebounded shot from Dogbey to propel the team to the shutout victory.

 

Senior goalkeeper Chris Moura (Rumford, RI) made four stops in the win for RIC, while sophomore Ryan Murphy (Cromwell, CT) had six saves in the loss for the Warriors.

 

RIC outshot Eastern, 17-13, and the two clubs were even in corner kicks, 3-3.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College, the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Little East Tournament, will host No. 3-seeded Western Connecticut in the semifinals at Alumni Field on Wednesday, Nov. 2 (6 p.m.).
