CHICAGO, ILL. – In a nip-and-tuck non-conference match-up from the opening whistle, the combination of freshman forward Josh Gonzalez (Portage, Ind.) and senior goalkeeper Brady Forman (Hastings, Mich.) headlined Manchester University's efforts Friday, Sept. 1.
Gonzalez flipped a shot attempt over the out-stretched arms of Illinois Tech net minder Alex Kern in the 18th minute of the first half, breaking a scoreless tie. Junior midfielder Ben Niederhelman (Ross, Ohio) was awarded the assist, the sixth of his career.
Forman, gathering his seventh career clean sheet, made the lone score stand up in the face of a
19-10 shots advantage for the hosts. He knocked away all seven Redhawks' shot on goal attempts including a flurry in the final minute of play to preserve the win.
Coach Corey Brueggeman's squad continues its Windy City visit Sunday, Sept. 3. The Spartans take on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Illinois Tech's Stuart Field in a 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time kickoff.
