Zoog strike spotlights season opener

ANGOLA, IND. – Junior goalkeeper Caroline Smith (Mason, Ohio) recorded her seventh career double-digit save total, while junior midfielder/forward Maranda Birmingham (Kouts, Ind.) and junior defender/midfielder Isabella Zoog (Brownsburg, Ind.) led the offense for Manchester University Friday, Sept. 1.

Smith, battling through a heavy 24-9 shots advantage for host Trine University at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium, managed 12 saves but the high-powered Thunder offense found the back of the net six times in route to a 6-1 non-conference win. Birmingham tallied three total shots, two of which were on goal, while Zoog netted her first collegiate goal from a free kick on the right side of the box in the 87th minute to break up the shutout.

The Black and Gold resume a set of back-to-back match-ups against the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Sunday, Sept. 3. St. Mary's College of Indiana visits Good Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
