NEWTON, Mass. --  Junior Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) registered 23 kills, 14 digs and nine service aces to lead Mount Ida to a pair of 3-0 college men's volleyball victories over Lesley and Newbury in a non-league doubleheader played Wednesday evening at the Athletic Center.

 

Southworth posted six kills and seven service aces in the host Mustangs' (6-5) 25-5, 25-12, 25-13 opening match victory over the visiting Lynx (0-1), as freshman Isaac Reed (Keene, N.H.) also collected six kills in the first triumph.  Sophomore Andre Foster (Davis, Calif.) and freshman Tyler Dorfman (West Hartford, Conn.) each posted five kills in the lid-lifter for Mount Ida, which received seven service aces, two kills and two digs from junior Tyler Shinkle (West Deptford, N.J.).  Sophomore Kevin Keohane (Jefferson, N.J.) added 19 set assists, five digs and four service aces for the hosts, who received three digs from junior Ethan Souza (Acushnet, Mass.) in earning their 19th straight victory without a setback in the all-time series between the two schools.

 

Freshman William Sgro (North Haven, Conn.) notched three kills in his first collegiate contest in the setback for Lesley, which received two kills each and a combined four digs from freshman Colin Holter (Warren, Vt.) and Cesar Neves (Cambridge, Mass.).  Junior John Gersbeck (Westerly, R.I.) chipped in with seven set assists and three digs for the Lynx, who received two service aces from freshman Armando Bahena (South Boston, Mass.) to go with a pair of digs from junior Steven Newman (Natick, Mass.).

 

Southworth recorded a double-double effort of 11 kills, 12 digs and two service aces in the Mustangs' 25-22, 25-20, 25-18 nightcap win over the visiting Nighthawks (1-6), while Dorfman collected 10 kills and six digs for the hosts.  Reed added seven kills and six digs for in the second victory for Mount Ida, which received seven kills and three digs from Foster along with two kills and two digs from Shinkle.  Keohane registered 32 set assists and six digs for the winners, who also received six digs from Souza.

 

Freshman Trevor Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) posted seven kills and 12 digs in the setback for Newbury, which received seven kills and five digs from senior Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.).  Freshman Rory Dobbins (Riverside, R.I.) added five kills for the Nighthawks, who received a combined five kills from freshmen Michael Weston (West Greenwich, Conn.) and Alvin Fernandes (Taunton, Mass.).  Freshman Jeremias Soto (Lawrence, Mass.) notched 20 set assists and six digs as well for Newbury, which received 16 digs from sophomore Oscar Chavez (Independence, Ore.).

 

Mount Ida heads to Quincy, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on Eastern Nazarene in a non-league outing that begins at 7:00 p.m., while Lesley travels to Chicopee, Mass. on Saturday, February 24th to square off with Elms in a New England Collegiate Conference clash beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Newbury heads into Boston on Saturday afternoon for a non-league tri-match with John Jay and host Emerson that begins at 1:00 p.m.
