BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Junior Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) notched 26 kills and 35 digs as Mount Ida split a non-league college men's volleyball tri-match with host Newbury and Dean Saturday afternoon at Hellenic College's Pappas Gymnasium. The Mustangs claimed a 3-1 triumph over the host Nighthawks in the opener before dropping a 3-2 decision to the Bulldogs in the nightcap.
Southworth posted nine kills and 19 digs in Mount Ida's (9-11) 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21 opening victory over Newbury (2-11), while sophomore Kevin Vanderhorst (Lawrence, Mass.) added nine kills, 13 set assists and four digs for the Mustangs. Junior Nate Gyampo (Providence, R.I.) and sophomore Andre Foster (Davis, Calif.) each collected eight kills and combined for four digs for the visitors, who received seven kills and three block assists from junior Tyler Shinkle (West Deptford, N.J.). Sophomore Kevin Keohane (Jefferson, N.J.) chipped in with 27 set assists, four service aces and three digs in the lid-lifter for Mount Ida, which received nine digs from junior Ethan Souza (Acushnet, Mass.) as well as a combined five kills and five digs from freshmen Isaac Reed (Keene, N.H.) and Tyler Dorfman (West Hartford, Conn.).
Senior Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) registered nine kills and four digs in the opening setback for Newbury, which received eight kills from freshman Rory Dobbins (Riverside, R.I.) as well as seven kills and nine digs from freshman Trevor Thorne (Oxford, Conn.). Freshman Jeremias Soto (Lawrence, Mass.) added 30 set assists and five digs for the Nighthawks, who received 12 digs from sophomore Oscar Chavez (Independence, Ore.).
Freshman Diondre Gomes (Fairhaven, Mass.) recorded a double-double effort of 21 kills and 10 digs in Dean's (6-7) 22-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-13, 15-11 five-set nightcap victory, as freshman Joel Carmona (Lawrence, Mass.) added 15 digs and nine digs in the second contest. Freshman Juan Fernando-Ruelas (Milford, Mass.) collected 19 digs and six kills for the Bulldogs, who received 38 set assists, seven digs and four kills from junior Bobby Tetreault (Mattapoisett, Mass.) along with 10 digs from senior Pepe Vieira (Brockton, Mass.).
Southworth notched a double-double performance of 17 kills and 16 digs in the nightcap setback for Mount Ida, which received nine kills and 12 digs from Reed along with eight kills, five digs and three service aces from Foster. Shinkle chipped in with six kills, five service aces and a pair of digs for the Mustangs, who received five kills and four digs from Dorfman as well as seven digs from Souza. Keohane collected 23 set assists and three digs in the second match for Mount Ida, which received 17 set assists, three digs and a pair of kills from Vanderhorst.
Mount Ida will be idle until Tuesday, March 13th when the Mustangs host Pine Manor in a non-league match at the Athletic Center that begins at 6:00 p.m., while Newbury heads to Cambridge, Mass. on Wednesday evening to square off with Lesley in a New England Collegiate Conference clash beginning at 8:00 p.m. Dean entertains Southern Vermont in a New England Collegiate Conference outing on Monday evening in Franklin, Mass. that begins at 6:00 p.m.
