WINCHESTER, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University men's soccer team earned the first victory in program history as it defeated Shenandoah 3-1 at Sprint Field on Friday night.

The Fighting Squirrels (1-0) played in their first-ever game at the varsity level after playing last season as a club program. The young team saw a pair of goals from freshmen to pull away from the Hornets (0-1).

Starting the scoring for MBU was Marcos Sasia with an assist from Alexis Barba in the 21st minute. The lone goal held until intermission as the visitors held on to a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, William Majano of Shenandoah tied the score with a goal at the 67:38 mark. Just two minutes later, Carr Panetta added what proved to be the game-winning goal with an assist from Juan Mejia. The Fighting Squirrels added an insurance goal in the 77th minute off the foot of Brandon John who took a pass from Rene Ramirez, 3-1.

The Hornets actually outshot the Fighting Squirrels 16-12, including 11 attempts in the first half. Shenandoah also held MBU without a corner kick and took seven of their own.
