Goal scoring is contagious when it comes to the Hamline men's soccer team. On Sunday against Wisconsin Lutheran at soggy Paterson Field, it took a little longer than it did in their season opener against Lawrence but the result was the same: three quick goals was enough to provide a knockout punch. In this case, it was a 3-0 victory over the previously undefeated Warriors.
Hamline moved to 2-0-0 on the young season with the win.
A morning rain softened Paterson and likely slowed down both teams in a scoreless first half. HU came out gunning in the first minute of the second stanza. Logan Weller started the barrage when he finished off a three way play with Lay Wah and Nathan Kange 29 seconds into the half. Six minutes later, Seif El-Fatairy maneuvered between Warriors and headed Jack Reddan's corner kick into the net for a 2-0 lead. Three minutes after that goal, it was Ryan Pyle's turn with a rocket from the left side.
At that point, the Piper defense and goalie Malachy Zamacona took over and kept the Warriors at bay the rest of the way. WLC had averaged 16 shots and allowed just one goal in sprinting to 3-0 start. On Sunday, HU held them, to just 10 total shots with Zamacona making a pair of saves to earn the shutout win.
Hamline now heads on the road for a pair of games. On September 13, they travel to Wis-Superior for a 7:00 p.m. affair. Two days later, HU goes the other direction with a 2:30 p.m. date at Wartburg.
