For at least a couple of days, the entire MIAC has to look up to the Hamline women's soccer team. The Pipers won the first conference game played in 2019, edging Macalester 2-1 at Paterson Field Monday. HU moved to 2-1 overall on goals by Hannah Schatz and Siri Parker. Melanie Hopkins recorded six saves to earn the win in goal.
It was the first home game of the season for the Pipers. Playing on a wet field damped by rain yesterday and today, HU struck first in the 21st minute. That's when Schatz sprinted hard after a Jenna Sampson free kick and worked her way past the Mac goalie. The Scots tied the game late in the first half. Parker untied matters for good when she drilled a hard shot home in the 61st minute for her second netter of the 2019 season.
Hopkins, making her first start of the year, was the busier of the two goalies with three stops in each half. Sampson and Gaby Diaz had two shots each of the seven Hamline unleashed on the Mac goal. The decision stretched the women's soccer team's current unbeaten streak against their neighbors to six in a row (3-0-0). It was also the ninth straight game the two teams had played that was decided by one goal or ended in a tie.
Hamline remains home Wednesday for a non-conference game against Wis-Stout. Game time at Paterson is 4:00 p.m
