Men’s Soccer holds off Fredonia, 3-2, clinches SUNYAC playoff berth

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Abdi Salim (Nairobi, Kenya/Hutch Tech) netted his first collegiate goal and Theo Pencic (Oslo, Norway) scored twice as Buffalo State held off Fredonia for a 3-2 home victory to lock up a berth in the SUNYAC playoffs for the fifth-consecutive season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salim opened the scoring for the Bengals less than three minutes into the contest when he headed a corner kick from Pencic past the Fredonia goalkeeper.
  • The Bengals pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute when Pencic slid a left-footed touch inside the far post of a nice cross from Nemanja Simic (Grand Island/Grand Island).
  • Buffalo State made it 3-0 in the 40th minute off a header by Pencic for his second of the game and 14th of the season.  Trevor Moreland (Newfane/Newfane) and Salim drew the assists on the goal.
  • Buffalo State let its foot off the accelerator in the second half and Fredonia climbed back into the contest with two goals just over three minutes apart in the 68th and 71st minutes.
  • The Bengals held on down the stretch, however, claiming the victory, finishing with a 12-4 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • Andreas Queen (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) finished with one save in the win.

 
FOR THE FOES

  • Matt Cullen scored both goals for Fredonia before leaving late in the contest with a red card on his second caution of the day.
  • Ty Bentham made five saves in the loss.

 
NOTEWORTHY

  • Buffalo State earned two points in the season-long, all sports Battle by the Lake competition against Fredonia, cutting the season deficit to 4-2.
