Men's Lacrosse Drops SUNYAC Contest to Potsdam on the Road

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team only scored one goal in the first half and went into the second half with a double-digit deficit that they couldn't come back from as they fell to Potsdam 17-4 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play. Junior attacker Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point) led the Cardinals' offense with a three-goal hat trick.

Senior attacker John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) also netted a goal for the Cardinals while picking up three ground balls. Tim Keenan (Poughquag, N.Y. / Arlington) and Cam Morin (Raynham, Mass. / Bridgewater-Raynham) both registered assists as Keened dished out two and Morin one. First-year defender Fynn Whitlock (Middlebury, Vt. / Middlebury Union) picked up five ground balls and caused three turnovers on the defensive end. Dylan Irvine (Ogdensburg, N.Y. / Ogdensburg Free Academy) and Matthew Tomlinson (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) both picked up three ground balls. First-year midfielders Dylan Zambito (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston) and Jake Gipe (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / Baldwinsville) both won three faceoffs while Zambito also had two ground balls.

For the Bears Peyton Walsh and Drew Rose both had five points as Walsh netted five goals and Rose registered three goals and two assists.

The Cardinals only registered 26 shots while the Bears had 55. The Bears had a 47-29 advantage in ground balls and won the faceoff battle 18-6. The Cardinals were 2-4 on extra man-up opportunities while the Bears were 1-3. On clears the Cardinals were 14-25 and the Bears were 28-34.  

Plattsburgh moves to 4-11 overall (0-6 SUNYAC) with the loss and has been eliminated from the playoffs. The Cardinals conclude their season on Saturday, Apr 27 against Geneseo with the opening faceoff dropping at 1 pm. Potsdam moves to 8-5 overall (3-3 SUNYAC) with the win and next travels to Brockport on Saturday, Apr 27 with the opening faceoff dropping at 1 pm.

The Bears opened the first with a four-goal run led by Cobie Cree. Woods stopped the run with a goal at the 3:10 mark off the pass of Keenan and made the score 4-1. The Bears' offense kept rolling as they tacked on three more goals and led 7-1 at the end of the first.

The Cardinals posted seven shots in the second quarter but to no avail as they were outscored 4-0 in the second and went into halftime down 11-1.

The third quarter saw a three-goal burst from the Bears before Woods scored his second goal of the game and made the score 14-2 Bears. Rose scored the last goal of the third and extended the Bears' lead to 15-2 after three-quarters of play.

The Cardinals didn't take long to score in the fourth as Eiseman opened the scoring at the 14:42 mark with Keenan picking up another assist. The Bears scored back-to-back goals at the 9:43 mark and 5:09 mark and pushed their lead to 17-3. Woods concluded the scoring as he tacked on another goal for the Cardinals at the 4:16 mark and made the final score 17-4 Bears.

Senior goalie Dan Clements (Putnam Valley) made 11 saves in 42:02 minutes of action in the loss for Plattsburgh while first-year goalie Cole Orehosky (Hauppauge, N.Y. / Hauppauge) made three saves in his 17:58 minutes of action. Sophomore goalie Saka Thompson made six saves in the win for Potsdam.
