Rougeot's Four Goals Lift Eastern Connecticut Past Mount Ida, 14-5

NEWTON, Mass. --  Senior Matthew Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn.) scored four goals to lead Eastern Connecticut to a 14-5 non-league college men's lacrosse victory over Mount Ida Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

 

The visiting Warriors (4-4) jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter advantage and extended that margin to 4-1 early in the second stanza on senior Harrison Urda's (Milford, N.H.) goal, but the host Mustangs (1-6) closed back to within one on tallies from senior Marcus Donahue (Braintree, Mass.) and junior Owen LaPorte (Farmington, Conn.) that came 55 seconds apart.  Eastern Connecticut netted the final three goals of the half to grab a 7-3 edge at the break, and the Warriors collected 10 unanswered scores over nearly 34 minutes of action that included a pair of man-up markers from junior Samuel Watson (Trumbuill, Conn.) as well as single man-advantage tallies from Rougeot and senior Connor Wyllie (Somers, Conn.) that helped account for the final margin.

 

Watson added a hat trick and an assist in the win for Eastern Connecticut, which received a pair of tallies and four helpers from Urda.  Wyllie netted a pair of goals for the visitors, who received a marker and two assists from sophomore Anthony Choronzy (Clinton, Conn.), a goal and an assist each from sophomore Brett Chin (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Jake Leibowitz (Trumbull, Conn.) and a single helper off the stick of freshman Tyler Koppy (Attleboro, Mass.).

 

LaPorte notched a pair of goals in the setback for Mount Ida, which received a marker and two assists from freshman Mike Alibrandi (Holliston, Mass.) along with a single tally off the stick of junior Eric Walker (Newington, Conn.).  Junior Chris Gorman (Shrewsbury, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with 13 saves on the day for Eastern Connecticut, while senior Cam Hayward (Derry, N.H.) made 14 stops in the setback for Mount Ida.  The Warriors, who netted a total of six man-advantage goals on the afternoon, outshot the Mustangs by a 44-21 margin overall, including a 28-18 margin on net.

 

Mount Ida heads to Leicester, Mass. on Thursday afternoon to take on Becker in a non-league outing that begins at 4:00 p.m., while Eastern Connecticut hosts Keene State in a Little East Conference clash on Friday afternoon in Mansfield, Conn. beginning at Noon.
