Hernandez Five Spot Paces Hamline Lacrosse Past Wartburg

Neither snow nor wind can keep Hamline's Maya Hernandez from finding the back of a lacrosse net these days. The junior forward picked up where she left off last weekend, scoring five goals and assisting on a sixth as Hamline pulled away from Wartburg, 16-5, Saturday at Klas Field.

The Pipers ran their seasonal record to a perfect 11-0 and upped their Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference mark to 8-0 by scoring eight times in each half. Hernandez, who scored four times in last Sunday's win at Concordia (IL), moved into a tie for second place on the Piper goal parade with 24, putting a warm feel over the crowd on a chilly day.

Radian Lenz scored three times with Kalley Elwell and Brayden Maass adding two each as part of a 41 shot attack.

At the other end of the field, Molly Dionne and Alyssa Bryan-Jeffries split the game in goal. Dionne played the first half to earn the win, recording four saves. Bryan-Jeffrties was called on to stop seven shots in the second session.

The Knights hung tough early. Wartburg scored 100 seconds into the game to gain an early lead. Maass tied the game but the Knights went back ahead 2-1. Elwell and Hernandez connected to push HU up by a goal but Wartburg tied the game at 3 with 18:58 left in the first half. The Pipers then turned up the heat several notches to take an 8-4 halftime edge. In the second half, Hamline wore the Knights down, outscoring them by an 8-1 margin. Hamline also held an 11-3 edge in ground balls, finishing the game with a 24-11 advantage in that department.

HU will have only a short period of time eo enjoy this one. They are back in action Sunday, April 14 against nationally ranked Colorado College. The Tigers will take a 12-0 record into a game Saturday night against Augsburg.(also being played at Klas).  Hamline then will attempt to tame the Tigers the next afternoon with the action starting at noon.
