#10 RMC Baseball Rallies for Senior Day Win over #3 SU

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to snap a 7-7 tie and junior Cole Stamm (Irvington, Va./Middlesex) retired the Hornets in order in the ninth as the 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team edged No. 3 Shenandoah 8-7 in ODAC action on Sunday afternoon for Senior Day.

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the first. Senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) had a one-out single, went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) for a 1-0 edge.
  • Junior Drew Ramos (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) held SU scoreless for four innings before the Hornets plated two in the fifth to go up 2-1. Ramos worked 5.0 innings with six hits and two walks.
  • SU added three in the sixth to take a 5-1 advantage. Iannuzzi had a leadoff homer in the sixth, his team-leading eighth of the season, to make it 5-2 before RMC took the lead in the seventh. Sophomore Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) had a leadoff double and went to third on a base hit by sophomore Lincoln Lubsen (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy). Senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) walked to load the bases. Junior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) delivered a sacrifice fly that brought home Lautenschlager to make it 5-3. Myers was hit by a pitch to reload the bases before Schmitt had a two-out single to knock in Lubsen and Johnson to level the score at 5-5. Senior Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) tripled to right center to drive in Myers and Schmitt as the Yellow Jackets took a 7-5 lead.
  • The Hornets put up two in the top of the eighth to make it 7-7. In the bottom of the eighth, Lubsen had a one-out single and moved to second when Bush reached on a two-out bunt single. Freshman Eli Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) pinch-ran for Lubsen at second and scored the go-ahead run on a base hit by Myers to give RMC an 8-7 edge.
  • Stamm had two strikeouts sandwiched around a groundout in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.

  • Stamm pitched 2.0 innings with two hits, no walks and three strikeouts to raise his record to 2-0.
  • Schmitt went 1 for 3 with three RBI. He extended his on-base streak to 13 games.
