Patterson Perfect Game, Spitz Walk-Off Push Cardinals Win Streak To 10

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team were at home on Wednesday for a mid-week conference battle against cross-town rival, Nazareth College. The Cardinals swept the double-header, taking down the Golden Flyers 10-0 in game one and 4-3 in game two. The results move Fisher to 22-10 on the year, 9-3 in Empire 8 Competition and their winning streak to 10 games.

 

Game One: Cardinals 10 – Nazareth 0

 

The game is highlighted by a perfect game by starting pitcher, Jess Patterson. The senior through 5.0 innings allowing, no hits, no runs and no walks, while striking out seven. She used under 50 pitches to efficiently mow down the Golden Flyers.

 

Offensively, five different Cardinals earns an RBI, with Allie Klonowski launched a grand slam in the fourth. The scoring started in the second with Maddie Donlin tripling to right field and scoring Kelly Cournoyer. Donlin later came around to score on an error by the Naz shortstop. In the third frame, a throwing error by the catcher allowed Clare Boegel to come around to score and Cournoyer followed with a single to center field, scoring Amalia DeMartino and pushing the score to 4-0. Donlin added to her RBI total with a sacrifice fly that scored Klonowski. In the fourth, Mari Spitz drove in the teams sixth run, before the Klonowski grandslam pushed the game out of reach.

 

Game Two: Cardinals 4 – Nazareth 3

 

The Cardinals jumped ahead in the first inning thanks to doubles by Spitz and Klonowski that put the team ahead 2-0. In the third, Klonowski sent another ball into the outfield for another double and pushing the advantage to 3-0. Ormond Cassidy began the game strong, recording three straight innings of scoreless, three hit ball. Nazareth began to chip away at their deficit in the fourth with a run, before evening the score in the top of the sixth.

 

Spitz played hero in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Spitz waited patiently for a pitch before launching the ball over the left field wall to give the team a 4-3 win. Spitz finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

 

Fisher hit the road for a double header against Elmira College on Thursday, April 27 as they look to solidify their position in the Empire 8 standings.
