No. 20 Women’s Lacrosse Clinch No. 1 Seed With Win Over Mavericks

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team competed on the road against Medaille University on Wednesday afternoon. The team dominated in the first quarter, which lead to a strong 60 minute game for Fisher. At the end of regulation, the Cardinals won by a 19-2 final score. Fisher now holds a 13-2 overall record and is 6-0 in conference play. The Mavericks are now 8-5 and are 2-4 in conference play.

 

Two minutes into the game, Sydney Carpenter finds Hanna Kumpf for her first of the night and the first goal of the match up. Carpenter controls the next draw and gets it into the offensive end. Mary Fiorentino finds the back of the net off an assist from Courtney O'Dea, Fisher's up 2-0. Carpenter with another draw control takes it hard to cage herself and puts it away to give Fisher and early 3-0 lead. 40 seconds later on the next possession, O'Dea again feeding this time to Kumpf getting her second of the day, 4-0 Fisher leads. Medaille takes a time out with 11 minutes to go in the first. Kumpf gets the draw control out of the timeout and brings it to the offensive end. O'Dea with her third assist of the day finds Fiorentino again for her second. Making it 6-0 is Kaley Griffin, assisted by Tara Osterdale. A caused turnover on the defensive end by Carpenter is transitioned down for another Fisher offensive possession. With 7:38 left in the first, Kumpf gets a hat trick and brings the lead to 7-0. Maddie Lowney with a defensive caused turnover gets to down to the offense where Farrah Zalla gets an eight meter opportunity and finds the back of the net. O'Dea and Kumpf each tally one to head into the second quarter leading 10-0. At the 11:34 minute mark of the second, Griffin gets her second. Kumpf records her fifth of the day to bring Fisher up 12-0. Just 33 seconds left, Dharma Makarowsky finds Fiorentino to bring the Cardinals lead to 13-0 heading into halftime.

 

As the second half began, Lowney picked up a loose ball on a failed Maverick clear and brought it into the offensive end. O'Dea gets the first goal of the second half, assisted by Osterdale to bring Fisher up 14-0. With 9:11 to to in the third, Medaille got their first scoring opportunity of the quarter off an eight meter, but Lilly Goodsell makes the save to keep the Mavericks scoreless.  Fisher working the ball around in their offensive, created an eight meter opportunity for Emma Biel. She converts to bring the Fisher lead to 15-0. The Mavericks gets on the board for the first of the night with 5:26 left in the third. Makarowsky puts one away, assisted by Carpenter to bring Fisher up 16-1 heading into the fourth. Fisher continued to dominate and control the tempo throughout the fourth quarter. Makarowky records two more goals and Carpenter with one throughout the fourth to bring the final score to 19-2 at the end of 60 minutes of play.

 

Kumpf ended the day with five goals, two ground balls and one draw control to lead the offensive. Carpenter with two goals and four assists for six points. She added one ground ball, one caused turnover and 10 draw controls. O'Dea finished with two goals, three assists for five points.

 

Up next for the Cardinals, the team will travel to Oneonta, NY on Saturday, April 29th and compete in their last regular season game against Hartwick College. The Empire 8 match up is set to start at 12:30pm.
