Men's Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against New Paltz, Falling 11-6

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team had a 3-2 lead after the first quarter but a scoreless second quarter put them behind at halftime and they couldn't come back from the deficit as they fell in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play 11-6 against New Paltz. Senior attacker John Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) was the only Cardinal with a multi-point game as he led the team in goals with two and caused two turnovers.

Senior defender Matthew Tomlinson (Miller Place, N.Y. / Miller Place) and sophomore midfielder Jab Duval Lapaix (Bronx, N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes) and attacker Lucas Longhitano (Laker George, N.Y. / Queensbury) all registered their first career goals while Duval Lapaix also recorded nine faceoff wins to lead the team. Junior defender Kyle Ruland (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) also put one in the back of the net for the Cardinals while also causing two turnovers. Donald Woods (Rocky Point, N.Y. / Rocky Point), Chris Falborn (Nanuet, N.Y. / Nanuet), Tim Keenan (Poughquag, N.Y. / Arlington) and Dylan Irvine (Ogdensburgh, N.Y. / Ogdensburgh Free Academy) all registered one assist on the day. First-year midfielder Jamie Gipe (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C. W. Baker) had a career-high six ground balls and caused two turnovers.

For the Hawks, Ethan Scully, John Reese, and Aiden Jones all had three points on the day as E. Scully had one goal and two assists, Reese had two goals and an assist, and Jones had one goal and two assists.

The Cardinals won the shot battle 42-38 and dominated the ground ball game with 45 to the Hawks 29. The Cardinals also won the faceoff matchup with 13 to the Hawks' eight. The Cardinals only had one extra man-up opportunity and their man-up offense did their job as they were successful in that one attempt while the Hawks were 2-5. Both teams had 20 successful clear attempts as the Cardinals were 20-24 and the Hawks 20-29.

Plattsburgh moves to 4-9 overall (0-4 SUNYAC) and next hosts Brockport on Saturday, Apr 20 as they celebrate Senior Day beginning at 3 pm. New Paltz moves to 5-7 overall (1-3 SUNYAC) and next travels to Potsdam on Saturday, Apr 20 with the opening faceoff dropping at 1 pm.

The Cardinals got on the board first with an Eiseman goal at the 13:17 mark. It took the Hawks nearly 10 minutes before James Flanagan got them on the board and made the score 1-1. Duval Lapaix responded with a quick goal right off the faceoff win and took it straight to the net followed by a Longhitano goal assisted by Keenan at the 1:47 mark. A little over a minute later Ryan Scully netted the last goal of the quarter and made the score 3-2 Cardinals.

The Hawks outscored the Cardinals 5-0 in the second quarter and took a 7-3 lead into halftime. The Cardinals had seven shots in the quarter, but the Hawks' goalie turned away four shots and kept them off the board.

Jones opened the scoring in the third at the 9:39 mark and shortly after Irvine found Tomlinson for a goal at the 8:17 mark and made the score 8-4 Hawks. R. Scully registered a goal at the 3:00 mark following a Cardinal penalty for the extra man-up goal and made the score 9-4 Hawks after three-quarters of play.

The Hawks netted another extra man-up goal at the 14:36 mark of the fourth followed by a Ruland goal at the 13:01 mark off a Falborn pass that made the score 10-5. Both teams' offense went quiet as the Hawks didn't find the back of the net until the 2:31 mark and Eiseman scored the last goal of the game at the 1:47 mark and the Cardinals fell 11-6.

Senior goalie Dan Clements (Putnam Valley, N.Y. / Putnam Valley) made 13 saves in the loss for Plattsburgh. Senior goalie Ryan Steinhart made 18 saves in the win for New Paltz.
